Spyware are the codes that collect information about the systems and pose a possible threat to the privacy of the user. It gets installed on a system and gathers information regarding the surfing habits of the users, history of the sites visited and the worst can be infecting the cookies that store password for sometime.

It can lead to the loss of functionality of various applications and also to the loss of user’s control over the system. Spyware literally means ‘software meant to monitor the users’ computing habit secretly’ thus posing a threat to user’s privacy.

Many a times these malware installations remain hidden from the users and thus the threat gets bigger and when it’s installed on a shared computer, it will get worse.

Adware is also a type of Spyware with a certain specification, that it will automatically display, play or change the advertisements once the software is installed on a system but it also keeps track of the sites visited and passwords entered. These installations make the system, vulnerable to a possible threat from hackers.

Anti-virus is a software program that is used to deal with such malicious software commonly known as malware. It primarily deletes those installations but this is the worst case for the software. The other cases can be repairing of the files by deleting the malicious code from the file or even by quarantining the file so that spreading and infecting functions of the malware can be stopped if not deleted.

A variety of strategies are employed by the antivirus programs – the most popular being the signature base which looks for the information carried by the software like the author name or even the name of the file or the special signatures they carry. But this method is no longer used predominantly rather a better strategy involving the heuristics is used.

Heuristics are the test cases, which incorporates the features of the given malware signatures and makes inferences out of that. These techniques monitor the behavior of the codes that whether they are obstructing any other programs from working or they are making a particular device go slow or even if it is consuming certain resources of the system and if they found so they do what anti-virus software is meant for. These days anti-virus is one of the most important programs installed with the operating system. It is meant for protecting the privacy and the hard work of the people.
